United Nations Church Center, New York, NY

20 years after the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, we are convinced that peace is attainable and inextricably linked with the advancement of women, who are a fundamental force for leadership, conflict resolution and the promotion of lasting peace at all levels. On the 15th anniversary of UNSC 1325, leading global women peacemakers will attempt to cross the De-Militarized Zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea-the most militarized border in the world-to unite women from North and South Korea in calling for peace and the reunification of Korea. Known as the Forgotten War, the Korean War (1950-53) claimed 4 million lives and ended only with a temporary armistice agreement. The absence of a peace treaty has left Korea in a state of war, which has led to the massive militarization and repression of democracy and human rights on both sides of the DMZ. Although UNSC 1325 ushered in a new international standard requiring all parties to ensure that women participate fully in peace negotiations and post-conflict reconstruction, North and South Korea have failed to honor its commitment to involve the voices of women calling for peace. Come hear Ann Wright, Cora Weiss, Suzy Kim and Christine Ahn explain why urgent action such as this is needed now to lift up womens leadership to end the Korean War. 1325: Women's Power Crossing the DMZ October marks the 15th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 which calls for the participation of women at all levels of governance, in peace processes, and in the prevention of violent conflict. One group that breathed life into UNSCR 1325 is WomenCrossDMZ, women walking to end the oldest war in modern history on the Korean Peninsula. On May 24, 2015, International Womens Day for Peace and Disarmament, 30 women peacemakers from 15 countries made an historic crossing across the most militarized border in the world, the two-mile wide De-Militarized Zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea. WomenCrossDMZ included two Nobel Peace Laureates, Mairead Maguire from Northern Ireland and Leymah Gbowee from Liberia, who led citizen movements of women to bring peace to their countries, and prominent feminists such as Gloria Steinem. The 1950-53 Korean War ended with a cease-fire, but not a peace treaty. WomenCrossDMZ walked to bring world attention to the need for a genuine peace treaty, reunification of families, and womens leadership in the peacebuilding process.
